  • When you make an online payment, check if the payment gateway has a secure https URL (internet address). The ‘s’ in the URL means there is certified security in place and your data you send will be properly encrypted.

  • Be vigilant and wary when a website requests more information than is usually required such as a National Insurance number or your date of birth.  Use an alternative date of birth if necessary.

  • Public Wi-Fi networks are common grounds for attackers who try to access your personal information and use it for their benefit at your expense. Try and avoid using them while making online payments.

  • Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to encrypt all the data you share across the internet on any website. It’s the best security mechanism you can employ to make sure the data you share is safe and remains confidential.

  • Use strong passwords – at  least eight or nine  characters. Weak passwords make it easy for hackers to break into your account and cause damage. No common words (even with letters substituted by numbers) and no numeric sequences. Do NOT use the same password for shops as for your bank accounts, paypal, credit cards, HMRC websites etc.

  • Preferably do not save your credit card details with an online shop. If they get hacked, your details go to the highest bidder.
