Hill Newton

IT Support

Background

Hill Newton are a specialist employment agency based in the City. Their IT system comprises 3 servers:

  • Windows 2003 SBS Domain Controller running other network services and Microsoft Exchange,  including Sophos Endpoint (Servers, PCs mobile devices etc) protection and Pure Message (anti-virus and anti-spam) for Exchange
  • Windows 2003 server running accounting software
  • Windows 2008 server running recruitment software.

In addition there are 10 workstations and 3 HP printer/scanners.

Their Internet connectivity is provided by a router/firewall that includes WiFi. It also acts as a VPN server to the office. A Layer 2 managed switch provides connectivity for all the above devices as well as IP telephony.

DataSafe have been providing Hill Newton with its RemoteSafe secure offsite data backup services for a number of years.

Need for Change

Hill Newton felt that they were not receiving the level of support for their IT system from their existing supplier. There was too much downtime/lack of facilities and long term issues that could not be resolved. When there was a major Exchange problem that the existing support could not sort out, DataSafe were called in. We rebuilt the server and installed a SSL (secure identity) certificate. Consequently Hill Newton asked DataSafe for a proposal to take over all their IT support and duly accepted such.

New Regime

After discussion with the management about their objectives, DataSafe conducted a full survey of the IT system. This resulted in the following actions:

  • Installation of DataSafe’s ResurrectSafe disaster recovery service
  • Upgrading the recruitment server with more memory
  • Bringing the patching of the servers and workstations up to date
  • Upgrading and correctly deploying the Sophos Endpoint Protection
  • Correctly deploying the Sophos Anti-virus and Anti-spam protection for Exchange
  • Removing  Hill Newton from numerous email block lists
  • Dealing with BT (their ISP) on their behalf to resolve connectivity issues
  • Upgrading vulnerable firmware on the network switch.

With the system running smoothly DataSafe continue to monitor the Hill Newton IT system on a daily basis, ensure patching is up date and quickly sort out any problems that arise – usual remotely, but with on-site visits when necessary.
